Phillip makes high fired ceramic pieces using stoneware and porcelain. The surfaces are built up using a variety of coloured slips and underglaze colours. Most of the work is partially glazed to create a contrast with the matt surfaces. Gold lustre or gold leaf are also applied in some areas to create highlights to some pieces. The majority of his work is small with most pieces not exceeding 15cm in height.

Philip and Leah Evans established the Round House Gallery in 1989. It was set up with the intention to promote and sell contemporary studio pottery made by leading ceramicists in this country. In 1992 the gallery was selected by the Crafts Council for the quality of work on sale. In 2003 it was selected for the OWN ART scheme which allows work to be purchased on an interest free basis over a ten month period. This continues to be a very popular method of purchasing more prestigious work up to a limit of £2,000.

By 1999 the gallery had re-located from Tutbury to a larger site at The Firs, Foston, Derbyshire. Considerable success has been achieved over almost three decades. The annual Baker's Dozen Exhibition (held each November) was started twenty nine years ago and in recent years one-man shows or group shows have taken place in early May. The gallery continues to stock work by leading potters in this country with the majority being members of the Craft Potters Association which is based in London.

Philip retired from teaching in 2014 and now spends an increasing amount of time helping Leah run the gallery and also making his own individual pieces of work. He also runs the occasional bespoke porcelain class focusing on throwing as well as hand built workshops using a black stoneware clay from Valentines, Stoke-on Trent. The gallery is open every week day and all daySaturday from 10.00am until 5.30pm. It is closed on Sunday with the exception for Derbyshire Open Arts week.

Visiting the web-site www.roundhousegallery.co.uk  provides an overview showing the quality of work available but is not better than actually coming over to see what is on offer at the gallery itself! A warm welcome and coffee awaits you.
